The Water Cooler
Weekly Sports Talk from Around the Nation
Edition 1: Win Dan Snyder’s Money!
Another week has passed in the sports world, as we sports fans have been granted another week of outrageous free agency spending, LeBron highlights, and obscure records broken. This week we’ll focus on the NFL’s Washington Redskins, whose headline-making signings of Albert Haynesworth and DeAngelo Hall have football fans wondering: Which one makes less sense? Albert Haynesworth’s new seven-year $100 million deal is worth TWICE that of former highest paid DT, the Raiders’ Tommy Kelly (7-year, $50.5 million). On the other hand, Redskins owner Dan Snyder will be shelling out $54 million over the next six years to a cornerback who got dropped by the Raiders last season. Hall’s big ego negates world class skill set as he plays extremely aggressively, constantly trying to jump receivers’ routes. At the time of his departure from Oakland, DeAngelo Hall led the NFL in both interceptions AND receiving yardage allowed by a defensive back. Even though $100 mil is ridiculous for an inside defensive lineman, Albert Haynesworth is a premier tackle who has been to two consecutive Pro Bowls. The Hall deal will take the prize for most outrageous signing so far.
Boomshakalaka! D-Wade, LeBron, Kobe, Dirk, Shaq and Devin Harris all went off for 40+ points at least once in the last week.
March Wackness! There’s a clear lack of consistency among the top NCAA hoops squads, but look for Oklahoma, UConn, North Carolina, and Memphis to snag the top seeds on Selection Sunday.
Let’s Make a Deal! Only one day until the NHL Trade Deadline and the biggest move yet involves Mike Comrie and Dean McAmmond.
Manny Ramirez! Don’t care anymore? Neither do I.
Until next week, this is Weekly Water Cooler Talk.
